For the next year Gareth is being followed by BBC Radio 4's Farming Today.
After contacting the BBC producer for Farming Today explaining my dilemmas about how to get into farming, the BBC decided to develop a series of programmes featuring the stories of seven different people trying to get into farming. I appeared during ‘Farming Today’ on March 29th briefly explaining my desire and passion to be a farmer. This programme was followed by a more in-depth feature as part of the BBC Radio 4 weekend programme ‘On Your Farm’, aired on the morning of Sunday 11th April, and continues to recieve coverage on both BBC Radio 4, BBC1 and BBC Radio York.
The BBC’s programme producer Martin Poyntz-Roberts said that that 'Gareth’s contact was timely as we were already looking at how, through our programme, we could have a look at the lack of young people wanting to get into farming. After all the average age of the British Farmer is, 58 years and younger people need encouragement from within the industry. Gareth has set himself on a very difficult business road trying to start his own farming business from scratch, with no farming background, no land and little equipment. Having met Gareth, I am very impressed with his knowledge and business planning. It’s going to be an eventful year following Gareth's development and journey to becoming a farmer, but he's passionate, focussed and above all, determined to succeed'.
