Gareth and John Craven from CountryfileAfter appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today (view more), my flock and I have been the feature of BBC Radio 4’s On Your Farm on 11th April, and was also the topic of the ‘John Craven Investigates’ section of BBC One’s Countryfile on 18th April.

On Your Farm and Charlotte Smith came to see whether, with no land or agricultural background, I can make it as a farmer as I strive to launch a career doing what I love. With my small flock of 20 Hebridean Sheep living on land borrowed from my neighbours, I told Charlotte that I long to have a farm I can call my own.

John Craven and the crew from Countryfile came to Yorkshire for two days filming in the week after Easter.  The aim of the segment is to investigate the predictions that we are going to need 60,000 new farmers and workers to keep British agriculture afloat, using myself and Howardian Hebrideans as a case study to see whether anyone can become a farmer.  During the filming, we made an inspirational visit to the established specialist farmer and producer Tim Wilson, of The Ginger Pig. We also travelled to Shropshire to meet a farmer looking for someone to take over his farm.

The two days filming was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.  I hope the piece helped to highlight the difficulties of starting in farming for other people in a similar situation to myself. My first appearance on Countryfile was shown on Sunday 18th April with a follow up on on July 4th with Adam Henson.
